I finally created an undersea grotto for him, and then quilted it up over the weekend. I’ve used both black (around the outside) and white (over the fish) tulle to help hold down all those fabric bits.
The black netting — which I snagged from the deep-discount garment fabric remainders table at a local fabric store — is dotted with metallic gold dots.
Quilted with a medium blue rayon thread by Superior, then I went back with my favorite chartreuse to add more details to the fish.
When it was time to square up, I trimmed the sides free-hand. The undersea world isn’t big on straight lines, so the edges of this are slightly wavy.
“The Grotto” is approx. 17″x21″. It’s very stiff, heavily quilted, with lots of layers of fabrics, tulle, muslin foundations, and batting.
Fish #2 is still hanging out on the design wall. Don’t know when I’ll get around to creating a sea for her to swim in… I’ve got some projects with deadlines that need to be quilted first, before I get back to whimsical play-time.
